THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinals Routed by Orioles at Busch St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals came home needing a reset after a brutal weekend in Philadelphia.They got the opposite.Baltimore scored four runs in the third inning, broke the game open with eight more in the fifth and handed the Cardinals a 13-1 loss Tuesday night at Busch Stadium in the opener of a three-game series.It was the Cardinals’ fourth straight loss and another damaging night for a team trying to keep any realistic postseason hopes alive. After being swept in Philadelphia, including a ninth-inning collapse Sunday, St. Louis needed to show some response at home. Instead, the Cardinals were buried by the middle innings and never gave themselves a chance to make the game competitive.The Orioles did most of their early damage with power. Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer in the third inning off Matthew Liberatore, scoring Leody Taveras and Jackson Holliday to give Baltimore a 3-0 lead. Christian Encarnacion-Strand followed later in the inning with a solo homer to left-center, stretching the Orioles’ lead to 4-0.Nathan Church gave the Cardinals their only answer in the bottom of the third, hitting a solo home run to right-center off Chris Bassitt. It was Church’s 10th home run of the season and briefly cut the deficit to 4-1.That was as close as St. Louis got.Baltimore turned the game into a blowout in the fifth. Holliday singled, Alonso followed with a base hit, Gunnar Henderson walked and Coby Mayo singled to left to bring home Holliday. Encarnacion-Strand followed with a two-run single after Peter Strzelecki replaced Liberatore, and the inning only got worse from there.Dylan Beavers walked with the bases loaded, Leody Taveras singled home two runs, Holliday added an RBI single and Alonso doubled home another run. By the time the inning ended, Baltimore had scored eight times and led 12-1.Beavers added an RBI double in the sixth to make it 13-1.Liberatore’s final line was rough. He allowed eight runs on eight hits over four innings, walking one and striking out seven. The strikeout total showed the swing-and-miss was there, but the Orioles punished too many mistakes and turned traffic into crooked numbers.Strzelecki also had a difficult outing, allowing four runs on four hits while recording one out. Caleb Ferguson and Ryan Fernandez handled the final innings, but the game had already gotten away.Alonso led Baltimore’s 15-hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a homer, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. Encarnacion-Strand finished with two hits, a homer and three RBIs. Holliday had three hits, two runs and an RBI, while Taveras added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.The Cardinals managed six hits against Bassitt and Yennier Cano. Bassitt worked 6.2 innings, allowing one run, no walks and striking out five. He did not overpower St. Louis, but he stayed in the strike zone, avoided free passes and never let the Cardinals build an inning.Church had the lone run-scoring swing for St. Louis. JJ Wetherholt, Iván Herrera, Alec Burleson, Joshua Báez, Ramón Urías and Church accounted for the Cardinals’ hits, but St. Louis did not draw a walk and never created sustained pressure.The loss continued a difficult stretch for the Cardinals. Friday in Philadelphia, they lost in 10 innings after taking a lead in extras. Saturday, they were routed. Sunday, they carried a four-run lead into the ninth and lost. Tuesday, they returned home and were beaten by 12 runs.That is not a rough patch. That is a hard turn in the wrong direction.For a team that spent much of August trying to sell the idea that there was still time, the margin is getting thin. The Cardinals had a favorable portion of the schedule in front of them and came into this homestand needing to take advantage of it. The first night did not just go badly. It unraveled.Baltimore entered the series under .500 but still fighting in the American League Wild Card race. The Orioles played like a team that understood the urgency. The Cardinals did not.There are still two games left in the series, but Tuesday was another reminder that opportunity only matters if a team does something with it. St. Louis had a chance to come home, stop the slide and start repairing some of the damage from Philadelphia.Instead, the Cardinals were outpitched, outhit and outplayed.Orioles 13, Cardinals 1.Another ugly loss.Another game slipping away from a season that is running out of room. The Cardinal Chronicle In the Spotlight: Josiah Ragsdale, a Rising Star St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurJosiah Ragsdale did not arrive in the Cardinals system as the loudest name in the Dustin May and JoJo Romero trade.That honor belonged to Alexander Frias, the younger, higher-upside outfielder who came over from Milwaukee with big raw tools and long-term projection.But Ragsdale may be the player in the deal who is closer to making things interesting.The 22-year-old outfielder came to St. Louis from Milwaukee at the trade deadline and was immediately placed at Double-A Springfield. MiLB Today lists Ragsdale as the batting and throwing left-hander, with a Cardinals system ranking of No. 10. That alone says the Cardinals did not acquire him as a throw-in. They acquired a player whose stock had already started moving.&nbsp;Ragsdale’s full-season numbers tell the first part of the story.MiLB’s official player page currently lists him with a .303 average, 22 home runs, 57 RBI, 33 stolen bases and a .981 OPS in 2026. Those are not “nice organizational depth” numbers. Those are breakout numbers. They point to a player who has blended speed, patience and growing power into one of the more well-rounded offensive seasons in the upper minors.&nbsp;That is the dream.The Springfield line shows the adjustment.MiLB Today’s player profile lists Ragsdale at .214 with a .696 OPS, two home runs, five RBI, eight walks and 21 strikeouts since joining Springfield. (MiLB Today) That is not a failure. That is Double-A baseball doing what Double-A baseball is supposed to do. It tests players. It forces them to adjust. It separates short hot streaks from sustainable development.For Ragsdale, the early Springfield snapshot is a reminder that the Cardinals did not acquire a finished product.They acquired a fast-rising one.Ragsdale made one of the loudest first impressions imaginable after the trade. In his first at-bat in the Cardinals organization, he launched a 110 mph home run for Springfield. MLB Pipeline noted that the homer was his 20th of the season and made him just the second player in affiliated baseball at that point in 2026 to reach the 20-homer, 30-steal plateau.&nbsp;That is the kind of sentence that changes a prospect profile.Before this season, Ragsdale looked more like a speed-first outfielder with on-base skills and defensive value. Now, the power has entered the conversation in a real way. When a player can run, defend, draw walks and start driving the baseball out of the park, he stops looking like a depth piece and starts looking like a possible big-league contributor.The scouting report supports that shift.Baseball Savant lists Ragsdale with a 45 hit tool, 50 power, 70 run, 40 arm, 55 field and 45 overall grade. That is a useful profile: left-handed bat, plus-plus speed, enough glove to handle the outfield and improving power. The arm is not a carrying tool, which puts more pressure on the bat if he eventually settles into a corner, but the speed and defensive range give him a wider path. (baseballsavant.com)Ragsdale’s development this year has been especially interesting because it has not been built on one skill.He has walked. He has run. He has hit for average. He has driven the ball in the air. He has added home run power without completely giving away the rest of his offensive game.MLB Pipeline noted that after a slow start to the season, Ragsdale slashed .338/.454/.621 over an extended stretch and became more of a fly-ball hitter. His fly-ball rate jumped dramatically during his Double-A Biloxi run, where he slugged .698 before the trade.&nbsp;That is the key development marker.Ragsdale did not simply get hot. He changed the way the ball came off his bat.That matters.There is still swing-and-miss to watch. MLB Pipeline noted that his strikeout rate was elevated, but also pointed out that his walk rate rose alongside it. That is a livable tradeoff if the power is real. A hitter who strikes out some but controls the zone, steals bases and produces extra-base damage can still be valuable.The platoon split is another area to monitor. Baseball Savant’s 2026 splits show Ragsdale has been far more dangerous against right-handed pitching, producing a .325 average and 1.069 OPS against righties, compared with a .226 average and .679 OPS against lefties.&nbsp;That does not close the book on him.It just gives the Cardinals a development target.Can he improve against left-handed pitching? Can he keep the power without becoming too launch-happy? Can he cut down the strikeouts enough to let the speed and on-base skills keep playing? Can he remain playable in center field often enough to maximize his value?Those are fair questions.But fair questions are not the same as warning signs.Ragsdale has already made one important adjustment this season by turning a speed-and-contact profile into something much louder. He went from a seventh-round pick out of Boston College to a Top 10 Cardinals prospect in barely a year. That does not happen unless the player changes the conversation.And Ragsdale has changed the conversation.The Cardinals need more prospects like this.Not every player in the system can be a teenage lottery ticket. Not every prospect is going to be Rainiel Rodriguez, Alexander Frias or a first-round headline name. Organizations also need fast-moving college bats who can climb the ladder, pressure the upper-minors roster and give the major-league club more options.Ragsdale fits that lane.He is old enough and advanced enough to move quickly if the bat holds. He is athletic enough to offer defensive and baserunning value. He is left-handed. He gets on base. He runs. And now, he has shown enough power to make evaluators look again.That is why his Springfield adjustment matters.The first home run was a headline. The full-season line is the reason for excitement. But the next few weeks at Double-A may tell the Cardinals even more. Springfield is where the league pushes back. It is where pitchers find the holes. It is where a prospect has to prove that the breakout can survive better scouting reports and better arms.Ragsdale does not have to dominate every night.He just has to keep adjusting.That is the real story.Josiah Ragsdale arrived in the Cardinals system as the second outfielder in the May-Romero trade. He may not stay in the background for long.His first full professional season has already produced power, speed, walks and a Top 10 ranking in the Cardinals system. Now the next step is proving that the breakout can carry through Springfield and beyond.For a Cardinals organization trying to build its next wave, that makes Ragsdale more than just a name from a deadline deal.It makes him one of the more intriguing outfield prospects to watch down the stretch. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinal Chronicle Pitcher of the Day: Cade Crossland Dominates in Peoria Shutout St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurCade Crossland gave Peoria exactly what it needed Tuesday night.Crossland, the MLB Pipeline No. 28 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, worked 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out nine in the Chiefs’ 2-0 win over West Michigan.His final line: 6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 KThat is a dominant start.Crossland controlled the game from the beginning, missed bats and gave Peoria length in a game where every run mattered. The Chiefs did not have much room to work with offensively, but Crossland made sure they did not need much.Peoria scored twice in the sixth inning, and that was enough.Jalin Flores doubled, scored and drove in his 82nd run of the season. Caden Ferraro went 3-for-4 and drove in the other run. Sammy Hernandez reached three times and stole two bases.But the story was the pitching.Crossland allowed one hit. The Peoria staff allowed two hits. The Chiefs struck out 12. THE CARDINAL CHRONICLE Cardinal Chronicle Player of the Day: Deniel Ortiz Fills the Line as Springfield Keeps Rolling St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe day after I tell Cardinal fans to keep an eye on Deniel Ortiz, he had the cleanest offensive line in the Cardinals’ system Tuesday night.Ortiz, the MLB Pipeline No. 27 prospect in the Cardinals’ system, went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk in Springfield’s 8-0 win over San Antonio at Route 66 Stadium.His final line: 3-for-3, HR, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R, BBThat is a complete night.Three hits. Two extra-base hits. Three RBIs. Two runs scored. Four times on base.Ortiz hit his seventh home run of the season and helped lead a Springfield offense that finished with 15 hits and four home runs. On a night when Rainiel Rodriguez homered twice and Josiah Ragsdale also went deep, Ortiz still had the most complete offensive performance.That says something.Springfield has become the story that will not slow down. The Cardinals have now won seven straight, sit in first place in the Texas League North, and continue to get production from up and down the lineup.Ortiz was right in the middle of it Tuesday.The home run supplied the power. The double added another extra-base hit. The walk made it a perfect night reaching base. They mistake “new” for “better.” They confuse a marketing refresh with progress. They decide that a familiar name, a familiar look, and a loyal fanbase need to be shaken up because someone in a conference room wants something fresh.The recent Cracker Barrel marketing disaster should have been a loud reminder that brand loyalty is not something to take lightly.People do not always connect to a logo because it is modern. They connect to it because it means something to them. It reminds them of family, tradition, memories, habits, places and seasons of life.That is why the Springfield Cardinals name matters.Springfield is not just another minor league affiliate. It is part of the Cardinals’ baseball family. It is where St. Louis fans have watched future big leaguers grow up. It is where parents take their children to see the next generation of Cardinals before they ever reach Busch Stadium. Look toward tomorrow.The Major League season has been treated as something of a bridge to a brighter future, a future built around a rejuvenated farm system, improved player development and young talent such as J.J. Wetherholt, Joshua Báez, Rainiel Rodriguez, Liam Doyle, Leo Bernal and others.Then the Baltimore Orioles arrived in St. Louis.The Orioles offer both the blueprint for what the Cardinals hope to become and a warning about what can happen when an organization begins believing that an abundance of prospects guarantees lasting success.Baltimore once had baseball’s top-ranked farm system and arguably the best collection of young position players in the game. Adley Rutschman, Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, Grayson Rodriguez, Jordan Westburg, Colton Cowser and others represented the promise of tomorrow.For a time, tomorrow arrived.Baltimore improved from 52 victories in 2021 to 83 in 2022, then exploded for 101 wins and an American League East championship in 2023. The Orioles won another 91 games and returned to the postseason in 2024.That is the part of the story the Cardinals would gladly accept.But Baltimore went 0-5 in those two postseason appearances, suffered a major setback in 2025 and discovered that building a highly ranked farm system and constructing a championship-caliber Major League roster are not the same thing. The Orioles developed an impressive surplus of position players, but they never created the same dependable pipeline of starting pitching. Even before the collapse, that imbalance had become an identifiable weakness. FanGraphs described the problem plainly: Baltimore produced position players but not enough pitching.The organization acquired Corbin Burnes for the 2024 season, but he left through free agency. Injuries struck the rotation, young hitters encountered the inevitable adjustments of Major League pitching, and some former elite prospects did not immediately become the stars their rankings suggested they would be.Prospect lists describe talent. They do not guarantee performance, health, roster balance or championships.That is where the Orioles’ experience becomes relevant to the Cardinals.St. Louis has made genuine progress. Chaim Bloom has rebuilt the development operation, increased staffing, introduced new technology and added considerable talent through the draft and trades. Twelve players on the Cardinals’ preseason Top 30 prospect list had joined the organization since July 2025. This is not simply promotional talk; the farm system is clearly deeper and stronger than it was two years ago. MLB Pipeline detailed that overhaul.Still, Baltimore should remind the Cardinals that collecting prospects is only the beginning.Rainiel Rodriguez can become an impact hitter, but the Cardinals still must determine whether he can remain behind the plate. Joshua Báez possesses tremendous power, but Major League pitchers will adjust to him, and he must adjust back. Liam Doyle, Tanner Franklin and the organization’s other promising arms must remain healthy, develop command and prove they can handle a Major League rotation.Not all of them will reach their projected ceilings. Some will not establish themselves at all. That is not pessimism. It is the history of prospect development.The Cardinals also cannot make Baltimore’s mistake of building an excess at certain positions while leaving the rotation unfinished. A farm system filled with catchers, outfielders and intriguing young bats will not compensate for the absence of durable, top-of-the-rotation pitching. Eventually, St. Louis may have to trade from its prospect depth and spend meaningful money on established Major League talent.That is the real test awaiting Bloom and the DeWitt ownership group.Will the Cardinals supplement their young core when the competitive window begins to open? Will they accept the cost of acquiring a proven starter? Will they move prospects before they become blocked or lose value? Will they recognize the moment to shift from accumulating talent to pursuing championships?Baltimore’s mistake was not trusting its farm system. Its mistake was treating prospect depth as though it were a finished roster—and perhaps holding too tightly to the future when the opportunity to win was already present.The Orioles proved that a top-ranked farm system can carry a franchise from the bottom of the standings to 101 victories. They also proved that the promise of tomorrow has an expiration date.The Cardinals appear to be standing approximately where Baltimore stood four or five years ago. That should give Cardinals fans legitimate hope.It should also give the organization fair warning.Tomorrow may be brighter, but only if the Cardinals understand that prospects are the foundation, not the finished house. The Cardinal Chronicle Cardinals Return Home Looking to Reset Against Orioles St. Louis, MO By Ray MileurThe Cardinals come home needing more than a change of scenery.They need a reset.After getting swept in Philadelphia, capped by Sunday’s stunning ninth-inning collapse, St. Louis opens a three-game series tonight at Busch Stadium against the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CT, with the Cardinals trying to stop the slide before it follows them into another homestand.The Cardinals enter at 66-66, back at .500 after a road trip that ended with three straight losses to the Phillies. Baltimore comes in at 63-68, last in the American League East but still close enough to the American League Wild Card race to make this series matter for both clubs.For St. Louis, that is the danger.The Orioles’ record says one thing. Their situation says another.Baltimore is not buried. The Orioles still have enough offense, enough power and enough postseason motivation to make this a difficult series if the Cardinals carry the Philadelphia weekend into Busch Stadium. The Cardinals cannot afford to spend the first game feeling sorry for themselves. The schedule has brought them home, but it has not handed them anything.Sunday’s loss in Philadelphia was the kind that can linger.The Cardinals led 4-0 with two outs in the ninth inning before the Phillies scored six runs, ending it on Kyle Schwarber’s walk-off home run. It completed the sweep, pushed Philadelphia’s winning streak to nine and sent St. Louis home with one of its most frustrating losses of the season.Now the Cardinals have to play again.That is baseball at its best and worst. There is no time to sit in the disappointment, but there is also no hiding from what happened. St. Louis had a chance to leave Philadelphia with something. Instead, it comes home trying to get back above even.The rotation is part of the concern.Right-handers Hunter Dobbins and Andre Pallante are both on the 15-day injured list, thinning a pitching staff that already had little room for more uncertainty. Dobbins is dealing with forearm trouble, while Pallante landed on the IL with right elbow inflammation. Everson Pereira is also on the injured list, taking another bat and glove out of the mix.That leaves the Cardinals trying to cover innings, stabilize the bullpen and keep the offense from having to win every game the hard way.Tuesday’s opener is expected to feature left-hander Matthew Liberatore for St. Louis against veteran right-hander Chris Bassitt for Baltimore. Bassitt enters at 4-4 with a 5.08 ERA, a 1.62 WHIP and 46 strikeouts. Liberatore comes in at 5-11 with a 5.04 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP and 125 strikeouts.This is an important start for Liberatore.The Cardinals need length. They need strikes. They need a clean early game. More than anything, they need the starter to keep Baltimore from turning the opener into another bullpen-management problem. With Dobbins and Pallante down, every short start has a cost beyond that single night.Liberatore does not have to be perfect.He does have to give the Cardinals structure.Baltimore’s offense is capable of making mistakes expensive. Pete Alonso leads the Orioles with 30 home runs and 85 RBIs, giving Baltimore a true middle-order threat who can change a game with one swing. Gunnar Henderson remains one of the better young infielders in the game. Samuel Basallo has added power behind the plate, Coby Mayo brings another dangerous bat, and Dylan Beavers comes into the series swinging well, with four home runs and nine RBIs over his last 10 games.The Orioles have 159 home runs as a team, compared with 137 for the Cardinals, so keeping the ball in the yard has to be at the top of the scouting report.That means no free traffic in front of Alonso. No mistakes in the middle of the plate to Henderson. No allowing the bottom half of the order to set up the thumpers. Baltimore’s lineup has enough swing-and-miss, but it also has enough power to erase good work in a hurry.The Cardinals have their own offensive work to do.Jordan Walker remains the biggest power presence in the St. Louis lineup, leading the club with 27 home runs and 96 RBIs. Alec Burleson has been one of the Cardinals’ steadiest hitters, carrying a .291 average into the series. Joshua Báez continues to bring loud power even while navigating the normal adjustments of a young hitter in the majors. JJ Wetherholt, Iván Herrera, Masyn Winn, Nathan Church, Blaze Jordan, José Fermín and the rest of the lineup all have to help make this more than a one- or two-bat offense.The Cardinals are 45-14 this season when they score at least five runs.That number says plenty.This team can win when the offense gives the pitching staff breathing room. It can look dangerous when the young bats put pressure on opponents early. But when the lineup stalls, every inning becomes fragile, every bullpen decision becomes magnified and every late mistake feels like it decides the night.Against Baltimore, St. Louis has to make the Orioles work.Bassitt is a veteran who knows how to pitch, even when the numbers are not as sharp as they once were. He can change speeds, move the ball around the zone and take advantage of impatient swings. The Cardinals cannot let him settle into an easy rhythm. They need to force him into deep counts, put runners on base and make Baltimore’s bullpen cover real outs.Wednesday’s matchup is scheduled to bring Kyle Bradish to the mound for Baltimore. Bradish enters at 7-12 with a 3.70 ERA and 129 strikeouts, giving the Orioles their best listed starting matchup of the series. The Cardinals’ starter remains to be announced.Thursday afternoon, Baltimore is scheduled to start left-hander Trevor Rogers, who enters at 9-8 with a 4.14 ERA and 114 strikeouts. The Cardinals’ starter for the series finale also remains to be announced.That uncertainty is not a small thing.The Cardinals are opening a six-game homestand against Baltimore and Pittsburgh, two series that look like an opportunity on paper. But opportunity only matters if it is taken. After Philadelphia, St. Louis cannot simply assume Busch Stadium will fix the problem.The Cardinals have to pitch better.They have to finish innings.They have to avoid the one big mistake that turns a manageable night into another frustrating loss.They also have to get back to playing with some edge. The Phillies series exposed plenty. The rotation is thinner. The bullpen has been pushed. The offense remains uneven. The Wild Card chase is getting tighter by the day.But the season is not over.The Cardinals are still at .500. They are still close enough to make the final month meaningful. They still have a young lineup capable of changing a game quickly, and they still have enough schedule in front of them to make this homestand matter.That starts tonight.Baltimore is not a club St. Louis can overlook. The Orioles are beginning a nine-game road trip and have their own postseason hopes to protect. They are coming off a series against Tampa Bay and now step into Busch Stadium with a chance to make up ground in the American League race.The Cardinals need to make sure they do not help them.The series is simple enough.Win the opener. Get the homestand pointed in the right direction. Stop carrying Philadelphia around like extra luggage. They are putting themselves in position to chase something rare: back-to-back Texas League championships.For Cardinal fans looking for a reason to keep watching the farm system closely, Springfield may be the best show in the organization right now.The defending Texas League champions are back on top of the league. MiLB Today lists Springfield at 31-18 with a .633 winning percentage, first in the division and first in the league. The team page also shows a .771 team OPS, evidence of an offense that has helped carry the Cardinals through the second half.Official standings snapshots over the weekend pushed the story even further, showing Springfield at 33-18, riding a six-game winning streak, with a +59 run differential. That is not a team simply hanging around. That is a team separating itself.This is no small thing.A year ago, Springfield completed one of the best seasons in franchise history by winning the 2025 Texas League Championship. The Cardinals finished that run with a decisive 13-1 victory over Midland in a winner-take-all Game 3, securing the franchise’s second-ever Texas League title and first since 2012.Now they are trying to do it again.The identity of this Springfield club is different from the 2025 championship team, but the result has started to look familiar. Last year’s group had JJ Wetherholt, Leonardo Bernal, Dakota Harris, Zach Levenson, Brycen Mautz and others playing important roles. This year’s version is powered by a new wave of prospects and emerging bats.At the center of it all is Rainiel Rodriguez.Rodriguez is the Cardinals’ No. 1 prospect and one of the most important young hitters in the entire system. He is 19 years old, playing catcher, and producing at Double-A in a way that demands attention. MiLB’s current player page lists him with a 2026 line of .321 with 21 home runs, 72 RBI, 10 stolen bases and a .966 OPS across the season.That is big-time production from any prospect.From a teenage catcher, it is something else entirely.Rodriguez has also earned Texas League Player of the Week honors twice this season, including the week of Aug. 23. He is not just holding his place as the Cardinals’ top prospect. He is strengthening it.Then there is Jesús Báez.Báez has become one of the most dangerous power bats in the Cardinals’ system, and Springfield has become his launching pad. MiLB lists him with 34 home runs, 91 RBI and an .881 OPS across his 2026 minor league season. His Springfield page also notes a three-homer, four-hit game on Aug. 23, a reminder that when Báez gets hot, he can change a game almost by himself.That kind of middle-of-the-order thunder matters in a pennant race.Rodriguez brings the elite prospect status. Dakota Harris, Travis Honeyman, Tre Richardson III, Miguel Ugueto, Jon Jon Gazdar and others have helped give the lineup enough depth to keep pressure on opposing pitching staffs.That is what makes Springfield dangerous.There is star power at the top, but there is also a lineup around it.The pitching side has been more complicated. MiLB Today lists Springfield with a 5.05 team ERA, which tells you this team has not been built on clean, low-scoring baseball alone. There have been nights when the offense has had to carry the load.Still, the rotation and staff have real prospect intrigue.Liam Doyle has missed bats all season, with MiLB’s pitching leaders showing him at 115 strikeouts in 87 innings for Springfield. Braden Davis has also piled up strikeouts, reaching 124 in 97 2/3 innings. Chen-Wei Lin and Jurrangelo Cijntje have each crossed the 100-strikeout mark at Double-A. That is a lot of swing-and-miss talent on one staff, even if the run prevention has not always matched the stuff.That is the development story in Springfield.The offense is carrying the headlines. The pitching staff is still learning to turn stuff into consistency.And yet, the team keeps winning.That is what should matter most for fans right now. Minor league baseball is about development first, and it always should be. But winning while developing is not something to dismiss. It creates pressure. It creates meaningful at-bats. It puts young players in games that feel different. It teaches prospects how to handle September baseball before they ever reach St. Louis.That has value.For Cardinal fans frustrated by the major league club, Springfield offers a very different picture.
